DNA-STR proposes an especulative solution to the Data Waste Crisis, with the DNA molecule as an alternative and more sustainable medium for storing information.
By 2030 it is expected that the global datasphere will grom from 45 zettabytes (2019) to 175 zettabytes. This means that there will be more bytes than observable stars in the universe. Hardware-based storage systems (HDD, SDD, tape) are not expected to successfully cope with this oversaturation of digital files and information. New technogies such as CRISPR and gene editing allow treating DNA as a material, and processes revolving DNA synthesis and BioEngineering will become more and more relevant in the years to come.
The object consists of a matrix of 5 cristal vials that contain a synthetic DNA sample. Within its structure, the sample contains an encripted version of a piece of information written in ACGT (the genetic nucleotide language).
